Why "As" Is My Most Favorite Song Ever

That part where Stevie Wonder ad-libs,

Do you know you're loved by somebody?

Makes me cry every single time. Because when he sing-shouts that line, what I hear is, "Don't you know there are people out there who love you? Don't you know you're loved by the universe? Don't you know that God loves you?"

We all know sometimes life's hates and troubles

Can make you wish you were born in another time and space

The desire to not be alive, or to be able to dip out of life for just a little while, has visited me many times in my 29 years. However...

But you can bet your life times that and twice its double

That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed

...These lines are what finally contextualized 1 Corinthians 12:18 for me personally when I was in my early-mid twenties and desperate for answers/guidance: "But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be." I am still desperate for answers and guidance, but somehow this verse gives me comfort, as maddening as it is for me to feel so out of control of everything.

"As" is a song about unconditional love that never ends between two people, but I always imagine it as the Creator reassuring me that I'm still worthy of being loved (even if it doesn't show up from the direction I'm expecting or in the timing I'm expecting, or it does show up but I can't internalize it). Reassuring me that I still have a place in this world and at this moment in time.
